| When Margaret Hall (Tilda Swinton) finds her son's secret gay lover lying dead near their lakeside home early one morning, self-sacrifice spirals out of control. Fearing her son Beau (Jonathan Tucker) is involved, Margaret covers up the evidence to protect him without a moment's hesitation, and weighs the body down with an anchor in the waters of Lake Tahoe. Complications immediately arise when the body is found and Margaret is approached by Alek Spera (Goran Visnjic), who demands $50,000 in exchange for a videotape that could link her son to the death. Unable to speak to her husband, a naval officer out at sea, Margaret must try and raise the money on her own. Her desperation to conceal the secret, whilst carrying on as a 'normal' mother to her three children, pushes her to the limit and sinks her into despair. When Margaret's father-in-law suffers a heart attack and Alek steps in to help, their relationship begins to change. As Alek becomes sympathetic to Margaret, and the situation he and his ruthless associate Nagel have created for her, the two become trapped together in a close, dangerous bond.
