Scientists talk about the planet being threatened by a possible climatological disaster. In this big budget feature the threat becomes a reality in quick time. The planet's oceans become cooler sparking deadly storms. A new ice age begins. A climatologist Jack Hall played by Dennis Quaid ('Cold Creek Manor' and 'Inner Space') is separated from his son Sam, played by Jake Gyllenhaal ('Donnie Darko' and 'The Good Girl').

As the disaster grows and the city of New York is threatened by sub-zero temperatures he attempts to make his way to the city to save Sam. As the state of the art special effects show entire cities destroyed by tidal waves Emmerich ('Independence Day' and 'Godzilla') ensures that the social and political issues of the day are put to good use.

Lets face it, there hasn't been a really good natural disaster movie since the 1970s, when they were everywhere (Towering Inferno, Meteor), but if anyone's going to kick start the genre, you'd like it to be a director with the vision of Roland 'Independence Day' Emmerich.

"Three years ago I read a book called 'The Coming of the Global Superstorm',"explains Emmerich, "and at the time I thought it would make for a great movie. We did a lot of research and realised that as fantastic as it may sound, this is a scenario which is possible".

The story highlights the frustration of climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid , Traffic) who, when studying weather patterns of the past, discovers that global warming could trigger an abrupt and catastrophic shift in the planet's climate. He tries to warn officials that it could happen if they don't act soon, but his warning comes too late.

As a series of increasingly severe weather events start to unfold around the globe, there are symptoms of a massive global change. The melting polar caps have poured too much fresh water into the oceans and disrupted the currents that stabilise the climate system. Global warming has pushed the planet over the edge and into a new Ice Age. A global superstorm is on its way!

While Jack alerts the White House of the impending climate shift, his 17 year-old son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal , Donnie Darko) finds himself trapped in New York City where he and friends Laura (Emmy Rossum , Mystic River), Brian (Arjay Smith , NYPD Blue) and JD (Austin Nicholls) have been competing in a high school academic competition. He must now cope with the severe flooding and plummeting temperatures in Manhattan. Having taken refuge inside the Manhattan Public Library, Sam manages to reach his father by phone and is warned to stay inside at all costs.

As full-scale massive evacuations to the south begin, Jack heads north to New York City to save Sam. But not even Jack is prepared for what is about to happen - to him, to his son and to his planet.

"The only thing that we did for dramatic reasons was to make the time period shorter," said Emmerich." But we were actually surprised to find that there were a lot of articles in papers and magazines which read more like our movie".

The plot of The Day After Tomorrow admits it takes a pinch of artistic license here and there, but it still manages to foretell the horrific effects of global warming to stunning effect.
