| The Dark
By David Lane, Blockbuster.co.uk
John Fawcett who directed the werewolf hit
Ginger Snaps directs this new hauntingly atmospheric film. The Dark features
Maria Bello (A History of Violence) as estranged wife to
Sean Bean (Silent Hill) and she journeys to Wales with their daughter in the hope that they can heal the void in their relationship.
Unfortunately their daughter is lost at sea by their cliff top home. While Sean Bean’s character, James, helps the coast guard to locate their lost daughter, Adele (Maria Bello) is haunted by another girl that is almost their daughters age, but claims that she died 60 years earlier. Adele begins the search to find out if the story is true and in doing so finds out about the horrific past of the village and its religious community.
All the actors turn out a great performance and Bello’s determination to find out the truth in order to get her daughter back is riveting. The atmosphere in the film really grips you as you are watching, also the depiction of ‘Annwn’ the Welsh underworld is extremely sinister, a Pre-Christian Celtic myth brought to life…or after life.
This is a gripping film showing the determination of a mother’s love and the lengths that she will go to save the life of her child. It’s certainly one to add to the list if your looking for a night in with the curtains closed. Forget what you think you know about spooky stories, ghosts, spectres and spirits, this dark new tale offers the perfect medium to take you to the next level.
