British soldier Jody (Forest Whitaker) is kidnapped in Northern Ireland - lured into a trap set by ruthless IRA idealist Jude (Miranda Richardson). Jody finds himself being used as a pawn: if the army don't exchange him for a high ranking IRA officer then he will be executed. One terrorist, Fergus (Stephen Rea), bonds with Jody whilst guarding him and the two swap stories about their lives and loves.

When the kidnap ends in bloodshed, tormented Fergus flees to London in search of Jody's beautiful girlfriend Dil. But disappearing is not as easy as he had imagined and soon him and Dil are entangled in a deadly web.
