Violet Sanford, (Piper Perabo), lives in
New Jersey with her father, (John Goodman). She has aspirations to become a
songwriter but to fulfill this dream she needs to move to New York City.
She moves into an old apartment with paper thin walls, whenever she plays
her keyboard, no matter how quietly, her neighbour starts banging on the walls.
Violet goes from one record company to another trying to have someone listen to
her music but there are very few openings and it's very hard to get noticed -
she is getting very frustrated.
Violet's apartment is trashed and all her music, equipment and reserve money is
gone, out of desperation she goes to a bar called "COYOTE UGLY" for a
job. She meets the owner and asks for a job. Frustrated, Violet gives the owner
a little attitude and the owner hires her on the spot, liking what she sees.
The bar is packed and the women working behind the counter are full of
attitude. They do wild dances, flaming bar tricks and anything sexy to sell a
drink. Violet doesn't quite fit in - when the owner tells her to get up on the
bar and do her stuff, she can't and is fired. Luckily on her way out, she
breaks up a fight and the owner, liking the way she handled it, gives her her
job back.
Violets boyfriend tells her that the only way she can break into the music
business is to go to open mike nights at the various clubs, but she can't, she
has unbelievable stage fright - and so they set out to conquer this fear and
get her career launched.
This is a gentle love story which ambles along amidst the country and western
style music as the girls all seek Mr Right, a pleasant, feel-good film.
