Catherine Deane is an ambitious psychologist who has been experimenting with a radical new form of therapy which allows her to travel inside the subconscious of a patient, including their dreams and private musings. The process has been developed by brilliant scientist Dr Miriam Kent but is still in the initial trial stages, and has only been tested on a comatose boy. When ingenious serial killer Carl Stargher falls into a similar coma, hours after abducting his latest victim, FBI agents Peter Novak and Gordon Ramsey approach Catherine to use the brain-mapping device and venture inside Stargher's twisted mind.
