DiCaprio and Hanks combine to great effect in this entertaining tale of fraud in the 1960s.
Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's smart 60s drama stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr., an audacious fraudster who, after the divorce of his parents, goes off the rails. Among other things, young Frank becomes a big-time cheque forger, cashing more than $2.5million in 26 countries in fraudulent cheques.
As if that wasn't enough, he also adds impersonating a Pan-Am air pilot, a doctor, a history professor and a lawyer to his list of crimes.
All this illegal carrying-on eventually rings alarm bells at the FBI, and a fraud squad agent, Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), is assigned to track the young crook down. An entertaining game of cat and mouse follows, with Frank trying to keep one step ahead of the determined Hanratty.
This is a great yarn, made even more entertaining by the fact that it's based on a true story. There's a fantastic soundtrack including music by Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, and Dusty Springfield, which sets the 60s mood perfectly.
