Time-obsessed FedEx employee Chuck Noland (Hanks) is stranded on a desert
island some 500 miles south of the Cook Islands after his plane crashes in the

himself in true Robinson Crusoe style. But as the
chance of rescue dwindles, Noland realises he has years of solitude ahead of
him - and the rigours of survival may not be enough to sustain him.
Keeping him this side of madness is his antique pocket watch, which bears a
picture of his fiance Kelly (Hunt), and a makeshift imaginary friend, in the
form of Wilson the Volleyball, which he procures from the flotsam of the crash.
One of the big multiplex successes of last year, Cast Away on video and DVD has
much to recommend it - not least the ever-resourceful Tom Hanks, who lost 55
pounds and grew a massive beard to emphasise the stricken hand dealt the
marooned Noland. The actor is on top-form throughout and certainly conveys the
isolation of his character with consummate ease. Moreover, Hanks and director
Robert Zemeckis have really tried to imbue the movie with a powerful sense of
realism. The beach on which the bedraggled Hanks is washed up is no tropical
white-sand paradise, but an inhospitable rocky outcrop, sporting a primitive
cave for shelter and littered with the battered remains of the doomed plane's
FedEx cargo.

For two hours and 20 minutes, you're privileged to see one man's quest to find
his inner self - and the results are mesmerising. Hanks is eminently watchable
and Zemeckis merely cements his reputation as one of contemporary cinema's best
directors. Most worthy of your time.
