It's 1941 and World War Two is just a story in a newspaper about happenings in
distant lands for the people of the Greek island of Cephallonia. The island's
Doctor Iannis (Hurt) warns his beautiful and educated daughter Pelagia (Cruz)
not to make plans for the years ahead, but she ignores him, promising herself
to illiterate fisherman Mandras (Bale) before he leaves to fight on the
mainland.
When the Greek forces are crushed by the German-backed Italians, Iannis and
Pelagia find themselves unwilling hosts to Italian artillery officer Captain
Antonio Corelli (Cage)
