Brick
By Cory Peynado, Blockbuster.co.uk

“You better be sure you wanna know what you wanna know.”

Already heralded as the coolest film of the year so far, Brick is a mysterious tale about the disappearance of a high school student and the unbelievable lengths that someone will go to in order to uncover the truth.

Director Rian Johnson stops at nothing to show us the intrigue to be found in this unique, dark and sinister world in which our characters live. Dubbed as the next Donnie Darko, this film carries the same cool dreamy atmosphere and brings along its own quirky underworld dialogue. Our main character is the ice cool student Brendan Frye. Intelligent, sharp, and amazingly determined, he has decided to focus on only one thing… the truth.

“Throw one at me if you want, hash head. I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you.” - Brendan

Fuel for this fire comes from the opening scene of the film when he gets a call from his innocent and naïve ex-girlfriend Emily, played by the beautiful Emilie de Ravin ( Lost). Panicked and scared, Emily explains that she is in trouble and needs help. These are the last words Brendan hears before Emily disappears. Brendan must now enter those same seedy crowds that Emily was mixing with and take on the toughest criminals in the neighbourhood to get what he needs.

As Brendan gets closer to the truth, the game gets more and more dangerous. Pieces to the puzzle seem to lead to a spine-tingling secret that people are willing to kill for.

The Verdict -
Joining Brendan on this almost suicidal journey is thrilling. Not many films have (quite frankly) the kahuna’s to go so far underground when it comes to the wrongdoings of high school teenagers. The unique local slang they use seems a little confusing at first but this will quickly get you hooked and soon you are just as determined to find out how the mystery unfolds and how our boy reacts to each and every shocking truth that he discovers. This is one to add to your list, you won’t regret it.
