They stole his identity. Now he wants it back".

Who’d have thought Matt Damon would make such an outstanding action man? He always seemed so young and squirty. But then along came The Bourne Identity, and even though little Matty was barely thirty years old when he made it, he somehow managed to convince the world that he was, in fact, a veteran assassin with James Bond skills. Not to mention a characteristic knack for getting into – then out of – trouble. And fast. Be it hand-to-hand, knife-to-throat or bullet-to-brain, Damon’s Bourne seemed to have years of killing experience. And having proved himself in movie number one, there’s an added layer of confidence to his performance in The Bourne Supremacy, the first of the sequels. Film number three, The Bourne Ultimatum, hits cinemas in 2007, and it’s a testament to how well Damon and director Paul Greengrass worked together on Supremacy that they’ve committed to do it all again in a couple of years.

As in the last movie, Bourne is a man without a past, still struggling to remember who he is and what he’s all about. Lucky for him he still has all his abilities, to drive faster than light, to lie and deceive like he was raised by the KGB, and to snuff out lives with maximum force and minimum conscience. Even with a hole where his memory used to be, he’s a dangerous, resourceful bloke. The type with safe deposit boxes tucked away in all of the important countries, loaded with guns, passports and wads of cash to fund his various endeavours. But with a blank head he tried to make a fresh start, to leave that all behind him and start a new life in paradise with sexy Marie (Franka Potente). Like that was ever going to last...

Before disappearing at the end of Identity, Bourne let it be known that should anyone ever come looking for him, both they and the people who sent them would meet a swift yet unpleasant end. You’d have thought they’d take him at his word and leave him alone. But when he’s framed for a crime that for once he didn’t commit, a certain something hits the fan as Bourne is forced to once again hit the road, solving the mystery as he motors around Europe, wasting all who dare to cross him along the way. Magic.

It’s worth noting that although Bourne is reminiscent of Bond, the world he lives in is a much more realistic place. While Bond’s gadgets, for example, are the stuff of fantasy, Bourne’s are all genuine and available to the likes of you and me. Should we ever desire spy gear. The trick is knowing how to use it, and then learning to use it well. This feeling of realism is reinforced by British director Greengrass, who gives the film a gritty, documentary feel by muting the colours and using handheld cameras whenever possible. Really, most of the time. Greengrass also did his best to avoid computer enhancements of any kind, keeping it real by insisting that all of the stunts in the movie be genuinely performed.

Tense and exciting with a screenplay full of surprises and some excellent acting, not only from Damon, but also from the likes of bad guys Brian Cox and Karl Urban, The Bourne Supremacy is a must for all you thriller fans out there. It’s smart and it’s funny, well paced and violent, really everything that a movie should be. Enjoy.
