The Borrowers are a family of tiny people, just a few inches high, who live in a miniature world under the floorboards of an old country house in England. Pod, Homily and their thirteen-year-old daughter Arrietty exist and furnish their miniature home by "borrowing" scraps and oddments which are no longer missed by the humans in the house. Their home is both ingenious and charming with cotton reels used as kitchen stools, postcards for wallpaper and blotting paper for carpet. Pod and Homily's greatest fear is to be seen by humans but when Arrietty bumps into a young boy George who lives in the house, a unique friendship grows between the two. Pod and Homily are distraught when they discover that their daughter has betrayed them but begin to forgive her when George brings them all kinds of lovely gifts from around the house. Unfortunately the wicked housekeeper Mrs Driver also discovers the friendship and the Borrowers lives are in great danger. They must emigrate right away and try to find Aunty Lupy and Uncle Hendreary in the countryside two fields away, but it is a very long and dangerous trek when you are only a few inches tall!
