Exploding from the pages of Marvel
Comics comes the thrilling follow-up to the hit 1998 film Blade. Blade (Wesley
Snipes) is half man, half vampire and consumed by a desire to avenge the curse
of his birth and save the human race from a blood-drenched Armageddon. In this
newest action-packed adventure, Blade must align himself with a high-powered
team of vampires to take on an even greater evil than either has ever faced --
a new kind of super-vampire that is itself on a vicious hunt to eradicate both
races.
"Blade's one of a kind," says Snipes, who also serves as one of the
film's producers. "He has all the strengths of vampires but none of their
weaknesses. His world is filled with the vampires he hates and his quest in
life and purpose for living is to rid the world of them, wherever he can find
them."
But Blade has changed since his last cinematic adventure, "He's grown
comfortable with what he is," says Snipes. "He does what he does and
has learned to enjoy it. Now he's drinking blood on occasion and is not as
traumatized by the experience. He has more flexibility and a lot more fun. He's
a looser Blade but possesses the same ferocity."
"In the first film Blade was a brooding superhero," says director
Guillermo del Toro, who has brought new dimensions to horror with such films as
Cronos, Mimic and, most recently, The Devil's Backbone. "In this one he
actually likes kicking ass. He seems to enjoy it a little more."
Blade's mentor and weapons master, Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), has developed
a serum that allows Blade to walk in the daylight. "Whistler is Blade's
partner," says veteran actor Kristofferson. "Their mission in life is
to hunt vampires - Whistler because he lost his family to the vampires and
found Blade when he was a kid on the street. He's a father figure to
Blade."
When Blade last left Whistler he believed his friend was dead, but the truth is
almost worse: he has been infected with the vampire virus. Now living in
Prague, Blade learns Whistler's alive and sets out to find him. "As a
warrior, you never leave one of your comrades behind enemy lines," says
Snipes.
Blade has been working with Scud (Norman Reedus), a brilliant slacker and
inventor of devious weapons, to destroy any vampires that cross their paths.
"Scud takes the place of Whistler at first," says Reedus. "He
operates in his workshop with Blade and makes weapons to kill vampires. Until
Whistler shows up again, and then he and Scud have a clash over their roles.
But Scud is mostly in it for the fun. He basically smokes a lot of pot and
builds weapons and has a good time killing vampires."
The hunt takes them into the lair of Blade's sworn enemy - vampire overlord
Damaskinos, who now needs Blade to deal with a far more deadly threat than
either has ever faced before. Nyssa, Damaskinos's strong and darkly exotic
daughter, and her co-warrior Asad, come to meet Blade to formalize a truce.
They will have to work together to stop the Reapers, a "super race of
vampires," says Del Toro. "These vampires are more like leeches, just
a thing that is there to take your blood. There's no erotic exchange. There's
no subtext. They just want to drain you. They are not giving you the keys to
eternity. They are not giving you nights in the moonlight. They just want to
suck you dry."
The Reapers, with razor sharp teeth, lightning speed and super inhuman power,
are on a hunt not only for humans but also for vampires, and to stop them Blade
must align his skill with the crew of hardened killers originally created to
hunt Blade himself -- the Bloodpack -- Chupa, Priest, Snowman, Lighthammer and
Verlaine - all led by Reinhardt (Ron Perlman). "Reinhardt is a
professional soldier," says Perlman. "He is the leader of the most
elite guard that protects and serves the emperor of the vampire world. And I
would imagine he's been doing this for a few centuries. He's very good at what
he does."
A mutated form of their vampire predecessors, the Reapers are infiltrating
humanity and vampires alike with the "Reaper Strain" that will leave
thousands of carriers roaming the streets in just a month's time. The infected
trail leads back to 'Patient Zero', Jared Nomak (Luke Goss), and Blade and the
Bloodpack must destroy him before he and the Reapers destroy the human race ...
