It`s 1957 and J.C. "Cully" Cullen (Matt Dillon), an auto parts worker by day and gifted crap-shooter by night, leaves his widowed mother in Rockport, Indiana and moves to Chicago to try to make the big time.

The toughest craps game in town is in the back room of The Gem Club - a seedy strip joint owned by Lorry and Cole. She works as the headline attraction and he runs a no-nonsense dice game. Lorry hates her husband and wastes no time letting Cully know it. Her seductive beauty soon casts a spell over the trusting young man and it isn`t long before he feels he`s in love with her. But as he becomes more aware of the dark side of this exciting new life, Cully is forced to make a decision that will affect both his personal and professional life forever.
