Two adult sisters live with their minister father in an isolated seaside village. After his death they are offered the opportunity to leave and lead rich and varied lives that they had only dreamed of but they both decide to stay in the village to honour their father's memory.

The arrival of Babette - a French housekeeper who has lost everything in the civil war - changes their lives and that of the village for the better when she promises to cook the most sumptuous feast...
