| American Gothic
By Ross Forbes, Blockbuster.co.uk
Set in the Southern town of Trinity in the USA, Sheriff Lucas Buck may be more than he appears.
This series was ahead of its time when it was originally broadcast, but audiences these days are more accustomed to slow burning mystery TV series like ‘Lost’ and ‘Invasion’ and American Gothic would fit in quite happily, but at the time the television network didn’t realise what they had on their hands and cancelled the series after only one series
Who is Sheriff Lucas Buck? (Gary Cole ‘Midnight Caller’ and ‘Crusade’) Is he the devil? Who ever he is, he’s not someone that you would want to get on the wrong side of, and he has more than a passing interest in the well being of the newly orphaned Caleb, what is their connection?
The series is a classic battle between good and evil for the soul of young Caleb, on one side is Lucas Buck and on the other is Caleb’s cousin and the towns well meaning doctor with a dark past (Jake Webber ‘Dawn of the Dead’). The tension and the supernatural elements build greatly as the series moves on and you dig further and further into the characters backgrounds
The only problem with the DVD release is that they have released it in the broadcast order on the disks with the ‘unseen’ episodes at the end. Although you are supplied with a list that shows the production order so you can (and should) watch them in the production order and the order that they were meant to be seen.
If you missed it the first time round or only managed to catch the odd episode then you will not be disappointed, this series gets better and better as you watch it. Add to your list now!
