| Airwolf – Season 3
By Ross Forbes, Blockbuster.co.uk
Nostalgia. Sometimes it’s better to leave some items in the past; Rusks, Thundercats and Space Hoppers these are among those things that were probably great at the time but if you tried them now would be nowhere near as good as you remember. So does Airwolf deserve to be among those things? Does it deserve to be left to fond memories of a helicopter that can fly upside down? Or villain’s that have the aim of Mr Magoo when firing a rocket launcher?
With a name like Stringfellow Hawke, there wasn’t much of a chance that he was going to end up working in a bakery or a launderette. It was going to be either night clubs or as a renegade pilot in a secret experimental helicopter. Seeing as another Stringfellow had already taken the nightclub position it was into the sky for Hawke.
By the time Airwolf reached its third series Hawk was getting quite adept at taking orders from this one eyed boss; Michael 'Archangel' Coldsmith Briggs III (if you have a double barrelled surname, nick name and third generation into the same name then you know this guy means business). Along with the return of Domonic Santini; Hawke’s co-pilot and Caitlin O'Shaughnessy, the series kicks off to a great start and just gets better and better.
Having ironed out the kinks of the earlier series, they have really got down to the meat and potatoes of what the audience want to see: Missiles, hostages, nuclear threats, other helicopters that think they can beat Airwolf, conspiracies a plenty and of course the biggest threat of all…a 2nd Airwolf, this time piloted by the bad guys.
Created at a time when production companies were taking vehicles and deciding if they would make great super machines; cars (Knight Rider) bikes (Streethawk) lorries (HighwayMan) Airwolf took the unusual stand point of not making the show too sci-fi orientated and kept the storylines more thrilling and action packed. With that Air Wolf stands the test of time while leaving its counterparts looking a little dated.
It’s time to sit back, strap in and just thank God that Stringfellow Hawke never became a baker. Our TV viewing would be a lot poorer if it wasn’t for this renegade helicopter pilot.
