In an overpopulated future where births are rationed, a near-fatal injury to
the only child of successful couple Monica (O'Connor) and Henry Swinton (Sam
Robards) is a tragedy in more ways than one. So when a cryogenics firm offer up
mecha-kid David (Osment) for adoption, the distraught family accept their terms
unconditionally. But when their child suddenly emerges from his coma, David
becomes surplus to requirements and is dumped into the wilderness alongside his
sensory supertoy Teddy. What follows is an existentialist pilgrimage as David
searches for love, himself and, ultimately, his creator.
Make no mistake, A.I. is an extraordinary film. The journey is never less than
mesmerising, with a storyline that grips you by the throat and won't let go
until the closing credits - thanks to some ground-breaking special effects and
emotional performances from all the leads.
Once again, young Sixth Sense child prodigy Haley Joel Osment proves that he's
a stunning talent, while Jude Law is outstanding as the flamboyant sex machine
Gigolo Joe, who accompanies David on his epic quest.
