Judge Robert Wakefield (Douglas), whose own daughter
is addicted to serious class-A drugs, is puzzling over incidents surrounding
several individuals: Javier Rodriguez (Del Toro), a Tijuana cop with a solid
reputation as a drug buster; Montel Gordon (Cheadle) and Ray Castro (Guzman),
DEA agents working on a high-profile stake-out in San Diego; and the beautiful
Helena (Zeta-Jones), who has taken over her husband's multi-million dollar drug
business.
Tracking across this complex web of drug supply and demand, Steven Soderbergh's
masterful Traffic is understandably regarded as one of the best movies to come
out of Hollywood in decades. It's already bagged four Oscars and become
required viewing for everyone in The Whitehouse - this isn't just a slice of
cinema but a profoundly powerful expos of the issues surrounding the global
drug-trafficking industry.
Beautifully layered, incredibly literate, and blessed with some exceptional
acting, Traffic resonates with the sheer power and visual mastery of a director
at the peak of his skills. A stunning, contemporary thriller with documentary
stylings and a charged message that cannot help but hit home, this remains
essential viewing.
