For more than 40 years, Luciano Pavarotti cut a most distinctive figure in the operatic world. His rare combination of power and quality marked him out from his peers and he became an instant hit in opera circles when he debuted on stage in the sixties. With both a huge voice and personality, Pavarotti was the first opera star of his age that managed to break through to become a global phenomenon when, in 1990, he and his fellow tenors Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo performed at the World Cup closing ceremony in Rome. His rendition of the signature tune - Nessun Dorma became the iconic song of the tournament. Later he and the other tenors went on to perform to over 2 billion people from a concert in Paris at the World Cup in 1998. A larger than life hero for many, Pavarotti will be remembered as the man who introduced millions to the wonders of opera and he will be sorely missed.
