DVD Highlights
There's rarely a dull day in the world of film and we've got a great line-up of new releases for you to enjoy this week. Click on the titles for more information or to add to your list.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Movie of the Week
A full-blooded adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's celebrated stage musical, Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street sees the director collaborating with actor Johnny Depp for the sixth time. Focusing as much on the gore as the tunes, Burton's Golden Globe-winning musical is also an 18 certificate slasher flick, telling, as it does, the tale of a vengeful Victorian barber whose customers routinely end up as the filling in his neighbour Mrs Lovett's delicious meat pies.
Tim Burton likes to do things a little differently and Sweeney Todd is no exception, this is certainly not either a traditional thriller or musical as we've come to expect. Instead, this is a film that occupies a genre all by itself. Opinion is divided roughly down the middle at the office to whether we like it. I thought it was excellent, but a little bit random. It's a bit disconcerting, someone singing with so much blood all around, but it's good fun. If you're a fan of Depp or looking for something a little different (and don't mind blood), this could be the movie for you.

Bee Movie
Something completely different! Jerry Seinfeld stars as Barry B Benson, a bee fresh out of college who feels disillusioned at his only career choice - making honey. When he takes a trip outside the hive, Barry's life is saved by Vanessa, a human florist in New York City. He reveals to her that he can speak English. As their relationship develops, he discovers humans eat honey and he decides to sue us.
Also featuring the voice talents of Renee Zellweger, Matthew Broderick and Chris Rock, Bee Movie has something to offer to all ages. A terrific family comedy.
The Andromeda Strain
A gripping mini-series from brothers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott and based on the novel by Michael Crichton; The Andromeda Strain is a terrific reimagining of Robert Wise' Sci-Fi classic from the seventies.
When an entire town is killed by a mysterious alien organism, brought to Earth by a returning satellite, a Government medical team visit the town and find only two survivors - a baby and an old man. The medical team isolate themselves with the survivors to try to discover why the virus spared them could provide the key to curing the disease. But everything is not what it seems.
If you enjoyed mini-series such as The 4400, or even shows that are a bit more down to Earth, this is an excellent mini-series.
Dragon Wars
This week's guilty pleasure is certainly better than most - billed as a 'modern re-telling of a classic Korean legend', this is best described as little more than an all-out action film - dragons versus people, helicopters, jets, tanks... everything. Think the remake of Godzilla....but erm, better.
Jason Behr (Roswell) stars as Ethan Kendrick, a reporter who investigates a series of natural disasters only to discover that dragons are not myths but are actually real and are now threatening modern-day Los Angeles. With the help of his ex-girlfriend, Ethan must outrun these vicious monsters and a deluded FBI Agent who thinks he knows how to save LA.
Look, this is never going to win awards for its originality but it is good, solid, guilty pleasure fun. Add this to your list if you fancy a popcorn movie.

Strays
A labour of love by writer, director and star Vin Diesel, Strays is a gritty and unflinching gangland tale about a gangster who tries to escape his past, but finds it difficult to go straight. Although this is a ten year old film, this has never been released on DVD before, and Diesel is superb in the lead role.
Diesel stars as Rick, a New York City drug dealer who starts to have second thoughts about his life dealing on the street and begins to look for meaning in his life. Soon Rick meets Heather, a typical girl next door and falls in love. He sees his relationship with Heather as an opportunity to escape the street... but things aren't that simple as his volatile nature and his past catch up to him, threatening their relationship.

The Best of the rest:

Here are some other titles that might take your fancy:
After successfully freeing his brother from prison, Michael finds himself wrongly convicted of murder in the excellent Prison Break: Season 3. Sticking with TV, serial killer series Dexter: Season 1, tells the story of a Police CSI officer who, in his spare times, murders those he believes have escaped justice, often meaning he investigates his own crimes.
The Abandoned is an original take on the traditional haunted house horror movie. It's been getting a lot of positive press from the top horror magazines. Last but not least, we have My Kid Could Paint That, a compelling documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of child artist Marla Olmstead who rose to fame aged four, printing 'abstract' paintings. Her paintings sold for five figure sums, causing heated debates at the time about whether her work was really abstract, or just similar to every other four year old child. Interesting stuff!
