DVD Highlights
With the long Easter weekend approaching, we have some terrific titles available from this week. Click on the titles for more information or to add to your list. Good Luck Chuck
Good Luck Chuck Good Luck Chuck
In one of the funniest films (with the funniest trailers), that we've seen in quite a while; Dane Cook stars as Chuck, a man who becomes famous as a 'good luck charm' for women to find their true love. Initially he enjoys the 'benefits' of his reputation however is forced to reexamine whether it's a blessing or a curse when he meets the girl of his dreams. If you like your laughs loud and quite often dirty, this is the film for you.
Beowulf Beowulf
Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie and Ray Winstone star in Robert Zemeckis big budget and semi-animated version of the classic Anglo-Saxon tale. Ray Winstone stars as Beowulf, a legendary Scandinavian warrior who is called on to fight and defeat the monster Grendal who has been terrorizing the kingdom. Once you get used to the CGI style of storytelling you'll find that it's good, certainly worth a watch, but not outstanding.
King of California King of California
Screen legend Michael Douglas shines in this quirky independent film from first-time director Mike Cahill. Douglas stars as an unstable dad who, after getting out of a mental hospital, tries to convince his daughter that there's Spanish gold buried somewhere under suburbia. A funny, touching tale that is a bit of an unknown gem; if you liked Little Miss Sunshine, you should definitely give this a go. Evan Rachel Wood also stars.
From Friday:
Only available to rent from Friday (although we'll send out on Thursday so you could get them on the day of release); these two titles are rental exclusives:
Lions for Lambs Lions for Lambs - EXCLUSIVE
Starring Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, this is a fast-paced political drama from director and political film activist Robert Redford. Lions for Lambs examines various American perspectives on the War on Terror, how it's doing, where it's going and the lives and careers it's shaped since it began. If you're looking for something quite thoughtful and considered then this could be the film for you.
30 Days of Night 30 Days of Night - EXCLUSIVE
The best true Vampire movie since Near Dark, 30 Days of Night tells the story of a small and isolated Alaskan town that is invaded by vampires over the course of 30 days of darkness. As the vampires feed on the town's unfortunate inhabitants, Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) must try to protect the survivors which include his estranged wife. If you're looking for blood, guns and plenty of action then this is highly recommended to rent.
The Best of the rest:
As always, there are plenty of other titles out this week that may take your fancy:
30 Rock Nominated for an Oscar August Rush tells the story of an orphaned musical prodigy who travels to New York to find his birth parents, Robin Williams co-stars in this touching drama from Kirsten Sheridan (In America). Earth is the incredible big-screen documentary, narrated by Patrick Stewart, that explores the natural habitats of creatures around the world; while the quirky 30 Rock comes to DVD, Tina Fey stars as Liz Lemon, the writer of a TV show that must deal with an arrogant new boss and crazy new star. Think Ally McBeal crossed with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Alec Baldwin also stars.
